WASHINGTON DC - U.S. President Donald Trump has hit back at claims he is lazy, and spends most of his time laying about, watching TV, reading  from stacks of newspapers, and posting on Twitter.

A leaking of his daily schedules recently revealed the president was spending up to 60% of his working day as "executive time," meaning without structured schedules of meetings and engagements.

Many of his tweets have come during this 'free' time, including on Sunday when he hit back at his critics, claiming not only was he not wasting time, but that in his mind he was possibly the hardest-working president ever.

When he came to office, he said, the country was a "mess," and as a result he he had so much on his plate, that he had no choice but "to work long hours."

The president has previously said he "learns a lot from watching TV."

"The media was able to get my work schedule, something very easy to do, but it should have been reported as a positive, not negative," Trump posted on Twitter on Sunday.

"When the term Executive Time is used, I am generally working, not relaxing. In fact, I probably work more hours than almost any past President," he said.

"The fact is, when I took over as President, our Country was a mess," the president added.

"Depleted Military, Endless Wars, a potential War with North Korea, V.A. (Veterans Administration), High Taxes & too many Regulations, Border, Immigration & HealthCare problems, & much more. I had no choice but to work very long hours!"

An investigation is underway as to who leaked the president's work schedules.
